Grinding Rock CPAs to Participate in NAFOA 2026 Panel on Governmental Accounting Essentials
Grinding Rock CPAs is looking forward to attending NAFOA 2026 and connecting with Tribal finance leaders, professionals, and advisors from across the country.
As part of the conference, Grinding Rock Partner Kevin Starkey will participate in a panel discussion titled “Governmental Accounting Essentials for Tribal Nations.” The session is designed to provide a practical overview of key governmental accounting concepts and how they apply within a Tribal government environment.
The panel will focus on the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, or GASB, reporting model and the foundational concepts that support accurate and useful Tribal financial statements. Topics will include governmental funds, government-wide financial statements, measurement focus, basis of accounting, fund classifications, capital assets, and long-term liabilities.
Panelists will also address several areas that can add complexity to Tribal financial reporting, including leases, subscription-based information technology arrangements, commonly referred to as SBITAs, component units, and self-governance activities.
The goal of the session is to help Tribal finance professionals strengthen their understanding of how these accounting requirements fit together and how they affect the presentation of a Tribal Nation’s financial position and activities. By connecting technical requirements with practical examples, the discussion will provide attendees with insights they can apply to financial reporting, audit preparation, and internal finance processes.
